Craftivism
Craftivism refers to activism expressed through crafting. It’s using your crafty skills to make a difference by making things yourself or buying handmade instead of hitting the big box store. Whether you’re crocheting reusable bags out of old plastic ones that would have otherwise ended up in the trash or turning old bottlecaps into art, you’re practicing Craftivism! It’s at the core of what we believe in: individuals can make an impact with their own two hands.
This, of course, can mean different things for different people. Here is what it means for the ladies of SuperCute!
Lorigami:
In the most obvious sense, to me Craftivism means Activism, as expressed by Crafting. I think a big part of it is showing people how their lives can be different by doing things themselves, or by changing their habits to ones that are not only more sustainable, but prettier and more personalized, and just more fun! Craftivism is a way to combat the mass-marketing media, and to really express yourself and your beliefs. I also think a big chunk of it revolves around supporting a different type of economy, a smaller, more local one which by default has less impact overall as well as more transparency and accountability.
Lizerati:
To me, Craftivism means leading by example. We all want a smaller, friendlier world and one that we can live in and trust our future to. It means putting a little thought in to the world around us and thinking about how it can be made better and doing so with a sense of lightheartedness. I think the best way to accomplish this is to show rather than tell and teaching and learning about that is what Craftivism is all about.
Glue&Glitter:
For me, Craftivism means taking used and vintage materials and giving them a new life. It means finding earth-friendly ways to package my goods and to promote my business. Sometimes, it feels like no matter what I do, it’s never enough. Rather than let those feelings get me down, I try to channel them into my work and am always striving to do better and better. Craftivism for me means empowerment.
