Score One for Aramark!

The cafeteria at my day job is run by Aramark Dining Services. I was always super bummed out when I forgot my lunch because, on top of spending the extra cash, my food came to me in a Styrofoam container. Boo! Well, today I forgot to pack a lunch and headed down to the cafeteria, expecting the usual, but no! The kind woman making my food handed it to me in a recyclable paper container! I can’t tell you how delighted I was! Of course, I gushed to her about how happy I was to see a business making a responsible choice until I realized I was holding up a line of hungry people. Oops!

Really, though, this was pretty much the highlight of my day. I’m just thrilled any time I see a big company like this trying to lighten its footprint. It really makes me feel like there is hope. I dashed back to work and hammered out a big thank-you email. Here is the wonderful reply they sent me:

We are all excited about the new line of eco-friendly paper products
unveiled this week. Look for these products to replace all styrofoam
over the next few weeks as we move closer to becoming a more
“green-friendly” cafe.

Hurrah! I know it seems like a tiny step, but I just see so much more in it than that. It’s a company that is obviously doing what it can, and Aramark definitely gets my respect for its efforts. For a company that size, even the smallest change makes a pretty sizable impact.

Becky

I noticed this the other day too!! When they first switched back to Aramark and went from the plastic ones to the styrofoam (bad to worse?) Both Brian and I sent in suggestions to change it. I doubt that had much to do with the switchover — but I’m glad they did!

Aw, yay!! I really think they take those suggestions into account. I’ve asked about things like vegetarian options before and gotten a really good response from them.
