The General Assembly voted down Senate Bill 120, which would have allowed MARTA to tap into $65 million in capital reserve funds. Since the system receives absolutely no state funding, it relies heavily on sales tax revenue to stay afloat. It’s a state restriction that is tying up the much needed money: MARTA is required to spend 50% of its revenue on operating costs and 50% on capital expenses. The really infuriating part of this vote is that the bill failed for reasons that had nothing to do with Atlanta’s transit system.

Sustainable Living Roadshow – Sept 20-21
The Sustainable Living Roadshow is touring the country in biofuelled vehicles spreading the word about green living. They’re hitting Emory University on the 20th and 21st! I’m a little worried that I won’t be able to make this one, since the 20th is the Strut AND the Munny show at MINT Gallery. If I can move at all on Sunday, though, I want to go check it out!

Farmers Market Bike Rally – September 27
September is Local Food Month, and three Atlanta markets are teaming up for a bike rally to showcase the goodness of local food! The rally starts and ends at the Green Market in Piedmont Park and hits two other markets along the way. There’s even music and a picnic lunch afterward!

Tonight, our pal Davis is playing a masquerade ball! Obviously, this meant we got together with some friends and made masks for the occasion!

To make the masks, we drew the shapes we wanted with marker onto two pieces of cardboard. You could really use just one piece, but gluing the two pieces together makes for a sturdier finished product. The one pictured above is made from a frozen dinner box. The feather is a single piece of cardboard that’s sandwiched between the two mask pieces. We used glue sticks to decoupage salvaged book pages on top, then added embellishments. I decided my mask would be the shiniest and did a layer of blue glitter glue (of course!) and a layer of glitter mod podge! Christy brought over a basket of ribbon and ric rac, and Lori had a tray of rhinestones and feathers and other sparkly things for us to use!

I took this picture because it makes me laugh a lot. This is me getting back to my crafty roots, after applying all that sparkliness to my mask!

Dave actually gets all the credit for the rain barrel awesomeness at our house. The barrels are sitting up high on concrete blocks, one on each side of the yard. He ran drip irrigation hose out of each one and snaked the hose through our flower beds. The bit of elevation creates enough water pressure that rainwater that the buckets collect trickles through the flowerbeds and keeps our pretty flowers happy! Our setup is pretty much perfect for our back yard’s needs.

I was out taking pictures around town today and stumbled on this awesome rain barrel on display at Donna Van Gogh’s! Maybe our perfect setup could use a little bit of color! Rain barrels seem to only come in black, white or green. Why shouldn’t reusing water be totally colorful and shiny? A plain rainbarrel from a hardware store seems to run between $80 and $100. The custom painted barrel goes for $149 – not bad for such a big piece of custom art!
